Services expo for our new students

There is a lot to organise when you first start uni life. We have suggestions and assistance for your arrival at the University and the city of Neubrandenburg to help with this process. Our services expo will be held on 25 September 2024 in the foyer of Building 1.

For instance, the city utilities will provide information about fast fitflat internet services along with a student discount. Health insurance providers and sports clubs will introduce themselves. You can also find out about accommodation and a whole range of leisure activities.

You can visit our digital services expo at any time.

Register your change of address and receive your welcome money

We recommend that you register your main residence as Neubrandenburg. You have a legal requirement to register the address that is your primary residence. The city of Neubrandenburg pays welcome money (maximum €150.00) to students of our University who register their main residence as Neubrandenburg for the purpose of studying for the first time at the start of their course. You can make an appointment online at https://www.neubrandenburg.de/Politik-Verwaltung/Onlineservice

You must bring valid personal identification or your passport as well as your tenancy confirmation (provided by your landlord).

Residency bonus for main residence in NEUBRANDENBURG

Why are we encouraging you to register your main residence as Neubrandenburg? When those of you who have lived outside Mecklenburg-Vorpommern before starting your studies with us choose to register the city of Neubrandenburg as your main residence, both you and our University benefit as soon as more than half our newly enrolled students are registered here. For every additional student who changes their main residence to the city of Neubrandenburg, the state pays a €1000 residency bonus. We can invest this residency bonus in tutorials, books, equipment, field trips and more. Part of the residency bonus goes to teaching and learning and 20 per cent goes to AStA, the general student committee.

Student assistant or academic assistant – jobs at our University

What is a student or academic assistant? Student or academic assistants are employees of German universities who provide support services in research and teaching and any associated administrative tasks. Employment is contractually agreed each semester.

According to the State University Act, ‘the prerequisite for employment as an academic assistant (wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft, WHK) is completed tertiary studies’ and ‘students who are enrolled in a course that leads to an initial or subsequent professional qualification can be employed as a student assistant (studentische Hilfskraft, SHK).’

What are the payment rates (as of 01.01.2024)? €13.99/h (WHK) and €13.25/h (SHK)

How do I become a student assistant? In most cases, students are made aware of the roles of SHK/WHK by their professors in lectures or notices around the University. Other structural units such as the University library, the Centre for Information and Media Technology (ZIMT), the Marketing and Communication Department or the International Office also need student and academic assistants.

How do I apply? The responsible person in the faculty or the structural area (professor or head of the area) submits the application with the student’s details. The necessary forms can be accessed on the portal https://portal.hs-nb.de/Online forms/2.9 student/academic assistants/Application to employ a student/academic assistant

The responsible clerk in Office II (Building I) then processes the application.

Contact person for application and support: If there are any questions about the legalities, e.g. maximum additional earnings for BAföG or the necessary documents such as income tax card and evidence of health insurance, our students can contact Ms Ryll in Office II Finances or the administrative offices of the faculties.

Apply for BAföG at any time!

Dear students – apply now for BAföG! The new law came into effect from winter semester 2019/2020, bringing with it several benefits!

You can find more information about the reforms introduced by the new law at: https://www.bmbf.de/de/bafoeg-reform-welche-aenderungen-sind-geplant-7319.html

All application forms are available at: https://studwerk.hochschule-stralsund.de/bafoeg/downloads-antraege/

You can always apply for BAföG, even if the semester has already started. The funds are retroactively available for the month in which the application was submitted. Because some students need a little time to gather all the necessary documents (particularly those from their parents), an informal application can also be made that meets the deadline. The informal application can be submitted quite quickly. When the informal application is submitted, the date it is received counts. Any remaining documents that are needed for the full application can then be submitted without any time pressure.

Grants

The Greifswald Student Union is responsible for processing applications from students of the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences for funding through BAföG grants. More information about the offers and services provided by the Student Union at the Neubrandenburg site.
